Many people will open their mail this fall and learn their Medicare Advantage plan is ending. For 2027, several large insurers are leaving counties (KFF):
- UnitedHealth Group is leaving 228 counties and entering 9.
- Humana is leaving 62 counties and entering 4. Humana says its plan reductions affect about 600,000 members (ConsumerAffairs).
- Health Care Service Corporation is leaving 498 counties, and Centene is leaving 359.
- Molina and Clear Spring Health are leaving the Medicare Advantage drug-plan market.
In 193 counties, there will be no Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage for general enrollment in 2027 (KFF).
Florida is hit hardest
Florida is losing more Medicare Advantage plans than any other state, going from 611 plans in 2026 to 560 in 2027. In Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, about 81,000 members are in plans that will end or merge. HealthSpring won’t offer individual Medicare Advantage plans in those three counties in 2027 (Sun Sentinel).

Network changes to check before December 7
- Florida: UnitedHealthcare ended its contract with AdventHealth. Without a new deal by December 31, 2026, AdventHealth will be out of network for UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members starting January 1, 2027. Nothing has changed yet (AdventHealth).
- Illinois: Starting January 1, 2027, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth will no longer be in network with UnitedHealthcare (including AARP) or HealthSpring Medicare Advantage plans (UChicago Medicine AdventHealth).
If your plan is ending, you have choices
- Pick another Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7.
- Go back to Original Medicare and add a drug plan, plus a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan if you want help with the 20% Medicare doesn’t pay.

The Medigap right most people don’t know about
Normally, Medigap insurers can ask health questions and turn you down. But if your Medicare Advantage plan stops giving care in your area, you have a guaranteed issue right. You can buy certain Medigap plans without health questions, as long as you switch to Original Medicare (Medicare.gov).
Timing matters: you can apply up to 60 days before your plan ends, or no more than 63 days after (Medicare.gov). Keep your plan’s termination letter. You may need it as proof.
Key Medicare dates
- October 15 to December 7: Annual Enrollment Period. Changes start January 1
- Missed it? Most people can’t change plans again until next fall, unless they qualify for a special enrollment period
